What is a keel boating permit? (Scout Assoc Definition)
The adventurous activity permit scheme is designed to ensure that only people with the relevant skills and experience lead adventurous activities for the young people. Therefore, all activities classed as adventurous can only be led by someone holding the appropriate permit.
A Keel boating permit is required for all keel boating taking place except in class C water.
Definitions of water classifications can be found in POR.
The term Keel boating refers sailing boats which have a keel, dagger board or centreboard designed to provide stability to the vessel via its weight. Keelboats have no built in accommodation (if it has accommodation it’s a yacht).
For a group of scouts with personal permits, all participants would need a permit, because each person is looking after themselves
Permits for Keel boating can be issued for any class of water. Each class of permit can be further restricted (such as through size of vessel etc.) to end up with an individual permit to the level of the competence and requirements of any person.
If you have permit to lead keel boating then you can look after only one boat at a time. You will need to remain on the boat whenever it is being used.
